Monica Verburg is a musician, flute player, and composer who draws her inspiration from the natural landscapes of Aotearoa and thrives on the energy of musical performance and collaboration.

Monica has recently recorded “Ki te wai”, an album of her compositions for flute and piano, inspired by the atmosphere and rhythms of living near the ocean.

Playing the flute for the Nelson Composers Workshop at the age of 18 inspired Monica to develop a broad base of musical styles and experience that included ten years of study, teaching, and performing in Europe.

Monica’s training includes a Music degree majoring in Composition from Victoria University in Wellington and a Diploma in Flute from the Koninklijk Conservatorium in the Hague where she studied with flute players Rien de Reede and Thies Roorda.

While classically trained Monica also has a special interest in jazz and improvised music. She is equally happy performing in orchestral and chamber music settings as well as jamming with bands and improvising at events. At the same time, she never compromises on always striving for the highest musical standards and quality of sound.

Monica also plays the piano and her skill in writing flexible music arrangements is a great asset to any musical setting.
